(Ken Auletta wrote about Sandberg and Silicon Valley’s male-dominated culture for The New Yorker in 2011.) She wrote a book- “a sort of feminist manifesto,” as she’s described it- called “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead,” which will be published on March 12th, and created a foundation that will support what she calls “Lean In Circles,” a program for professional women that encourages them to review social-science research, share stories, receive instruction on career development, and “lean in” to (as opposed to opt out of) their careers. Drawing on her own experience in the corporate world, Sandberg has taken up the pressing question of what’s stopping more women from rising to the highest positions of power. It wasn’t the first time Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, had been featured prominently in the paper, but this story, written by Jodi Kantor, concerned a personal project that Sandberg had been pursuing outside of her work at Facebook. On February 22nd, the New York Times published a fifteen-hundred-word story about Sheryl Sandberg on its front page. ![]() ![]() A table of contents notes each tale’s provenance. This collection succeeds as an introduction to both the sometimes brutal stories and the wide variety of comics styles. Green’s antic-filled expressions lend cruel hilarity to the tale of fratricide Kate and Shaggy Shanahan’s “Tatterhood” telling uses an energetic line to portray two sisters with opposite personalities and Jose Pimienta’s “Hamelin’s Piper” weaves a silent story in sweeping visuals. ![]() The breadth of art styles, all rendered in black-and-white, complements the stories’ variety. Some, such as Mary Cagle’s caricatured “Jack and the Beanstalk,” are relatively faithful to their original renditions others’ creators add their own flair, as in Kory Bing’s “The Nixie of the Mill-Pond,” in which the Nixie is portrayed as a grotesque creature rather than a pre-Raphaelite beauty. They had money and land, and their prosperity increased year by year more and more. ![]() There was once upon a time a miller who lived with his wife in great contentment. We sat, drinking our tea and watching the rain fall on his front porch. ![]() What struck me about this book is how the simplicity of the words lets the character portraits shine through. (I mean, they think adults know what they’re doing. ![]() I loved the way that Sáenz was able to capture that liminal state of being sixteen or seventeen – on one hand, the boys are desperately struggling to be adults and find their identities, and on the other, they are the very definition of young naiveté. Dante is particularly eloquent, but it’s in an awkward and painfully self-aware way Ari is gruff and reserved. ![]() Ari and Dante are neither perfect, poetic specimens of sixteen, nor are they crazy crude for shock value. Even when he’s just expressing basic statements, like “being sixteen sucks,” he writes it in a voice that rings true. Sáenz’s prose is deceptively simple, yet lyrical. Talky Talk: Straight Up With a Twist of Poetry Is there or isn’t there something between the two boys? Or is there something between each of them and a couple of girls? There are a few incredibly nice moments either way - nothing that will melt your pants, but I bet it will melt your heart. I wanted to hug them, but mostly I just enjoyed watching them figure everything out on their own.
